Gender Poll-itics (ejc)

April 28th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Pregnancy

We don’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl. But everyone else does. The numbers are in: 5 out of 5 Korean ladies at the nail salon agree it’s a boy since I am “all up high” (confirmed with the prods and pats of 10 beautifully-manicured hands). 3 out of 3 Female [...]

When I was 21… (dmjg)

April 26th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

As Emily mentioned, part of our baby shower yesterday involved people writing birthday cards for the baby for years 1 – 30. Most people sealed their envelopes, keeping their message a secret until the appropriate birthday. Others elected to share their message with the group. Here is what our child will read on his/her 21st [...]

Leaving Chicago (emjc)

April 26th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Uncategorized

We had our baby shower today hosted by P & V. And it was truly lovely: my favorite food, my favorite people and their favorite books. In lieu of baby gifts, we asked for people to bring their favorite children’s books and we received everything from counting books to gorgeously-illustrated picture books to the Little [...]

A conversation (dmjg)

April 25th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Pregnancy

Emily: If you could experience the pain of childbirth for me, would you? Daniel: (silence) Emily: Uh, Dan? Daniel: I would be willing to take half: it’s a question of justice.

The Elk and the Epidural (ejc)

April 24th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Pregnancy

Russian water births, thankfully, have nothing to do with moving to Northfield. However, they have come up as a topic on our journey to parenthood. We’re enrolled in a pretty hippie childbirth preparation course at a local yoga studio, Bloom. It’s been a great course so far and the woman who leads it is a [...]

I like to ride my bicycle (dmjg)

April 23rd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Biking, Chicago

Indeed I do. Tomorrow I get to ride up to Evanston for a conference at Northwestern. Poor Emily has been deprived of one our great pleasures: riding in Chicago. I will miss flying by standstill traffic on my bike. There is no standstill traffic in Northfield.

Chicago Baby (ejc)

April 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Chicago, Northfield, Pregnancy

Two sets of friends have noted that the baby will be able to lay claim to Chicago as a birthplace. In Northfield, this could possibly give our child a bit of cache: Birdie can be very sangfroid about corrupt grade school officials and “pay-to-play” extracurriculars. It’s a shame we’re not still in Hyde Park as the [...]

Becoming a man (dmjg)

April 22nd, 2009 · 6 Comments · DIY

I’ve already had my bar mitzvah but, really, that counts for nothing. This year, however, has been more significant manhood-wise than any other to this point. To wit: I got a job, I finished my dissertation, we bought a station wagon, we’re buying a house, we’re having a baby. I am diving headlong into middle [...]

The Plan

April 18th, 2009 · 4 Comments · House

Our to-do list for 2009 included Daniel getting a job, having the baby, Daniel finishing his dissertation and then moving to X. So far, the job is at Carleton College and X is Northfield, Minnesota, population 17,000. The baby and dissertation are still under construction (anticipated to be completed 5/19 and 6/17 respectively) but we [...]
