Our to-do list for 2009 included Daniel getting a job, having the baby, Daniel finishing his dissertation and then moving to X. So far, the job is at Carleton College and X is Northfield, Minnesota, population 17,000. The baby and dissertation are still under construction (anticipated to be completed 5/19 and 6/17 respectively) but we hold great hopes for each.
We want to start “Above Average & Good Looking” to keep our friends and family up-to-date about our move and life in Northfield, MN. For our non-NPR readers, public radio host and author Garrison Keillor chronicles the lives of the residents of Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, where “the women are strong, all the men are good looking and all the children are above average.”
Right now, we’re trying to buy a house. It’s a lovely 1920s Arts and Crafts style bungalow that’s more or less everything we hoped for. We’re in the midst of putting together a formal offer but since it is a private sale, we have already worked out the essentials of the deal with the current owner. More or less we’ve done everything first-time home buyers are not supposed to do (no agent, FSBO, talking to seller directly, using the words “love” and “to die for” when walking around the house with seller, naming price before appraisal etc). but we think things might well work out.
So that’s the plan. Daniel and I will try to update the blog two times a week to keep you apprised of all the details.

Congrats on the new everything. You three will be a fitting addition to the land of Minnesota Nice.
Love the blog and look forward to keeping up with you all through many forms of technology.
Why leave out the “strong” from the title though?
Huh. Good point. Perhaps we’ll revise. Perhaps we’ll wait until we deserve it…
Wow. . . parenthood, home ownership, and a new job. It’s an exciting time for you and baby. Can’t wait to hear all bout it!
And I love the house! I hope it works out!
