As Emily mentioned, part of our baby shower yesterday involved people writing birthday cards for the baby for years 1 – 30. Most people sealed their envelopes, keeping their message a secret until the appropriate birthday. Others elected to share their message with the group. Here is what our child will read on his/her 21st birthday, courtesy of K.:
“Hello George,
Now that you are 21, you can finally hear the truth. Dan is not your father. I know this is surprising news. Maybe not, though. Your creamy black skin might have already suggested this to you — that or your basketball acumen, or your decided un-Canadian-ness.
I am relaying this information to you now because my career has come to a stage where it’s possible for me to come clean.
I hope we can get to know each other in the future.
Love, your father,
Barack Obama”
What K. didn’t know is that I have evidence of an “encounter” between Emily and the then junior Senator from Illinois:
I have been harboring suspicions for some time now. Sure, the timing isn’t perfect. But they both seem pretty happy. The sad thing is, I don’t think I’d mind. (That’s a real picture by the way).

Oh, Dan! That’s so patriotic of you — and you’re not even an official resident alien yet!
