It’s 11:51. The midwife gave Emily Cervidil about two hours ago. Cervidil ripens the cervix and, in doing so, can induce labor. So far so good — Em’s having pretty steady, painful contractions. So no sleep. Instead, we’ve been lying in her bed listening to Bill Evans’ albums (Solo Sessions Vol.1 & Waltz for Debby) through the headphone splitter attached to my iPod. She just discovered the games on the iPod and is now completely absorbed in one of them (Emily just said, “Contraction.” I said “Should I come over there?” She replied, “No. I’ve got a new labor support.” Who needs a husband when you’ve got an iPod?).
This isn’t how we imagined things would go. But it’s very very peaceful in the room and I love that we’re alone together; listening to Bill Evans; and waiting for our baby.

Parents make plans, Baby laughs – that’s how it always is. We’re thinking about the three of you, and can’t wait to meet the new family (if only in pictures…)
