We went to the Minnesota State Fair yesterday. The State Fair is a big deal in MN. Just to give you an idea: in the 7 years I lived in Illinois I never once heard of the Illinois State Fair. I’m sure there is one (it’s probably down state?), but it certainly wasn’t on anyone’s [...]

Camping (he said)
August 30th, 2009 · No Comments · EDG, Trips
Some weeks back, S & S posted their tips for successfully camping with an infant. They left out one crucial bit: have a baby like Ezra. Which is to say: a baby that falls asleep of his own accord when you put him down and then stays asleep no matter is going on around him. [...]

Camping (She said)
August 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments · EDG, Trips
Our friends Sarah and Sandy are big campers and took their baby Ezra camping at Devil’s Lake, WI when he was not yet two months. Remarkably, they enjoyed themselves. When Sandy mentioned to Daniel that they were going on a second camping trip before the end of the summer, Daniel expressed interest in tagging along. [...]

Tiny’s Hot Dogs
August 23rd, 2009 · 3 Comments · Northfield
As many of you know, I loves me some hot dogs. I know how they’re made. I even watched a show once about it. And I still love them. They’re a bit of Americana I’ve adopted whole hog (so to speak). Eating hot dogs is wildly inconsistent with my semi-firm commitment to eating ethical meat. [...]

Ellie Rolls Over

Ellie does many amazing things. Like sleeping 7 hours straight two nights in a row and then waking up 4 times last night. But here’s a great new trick: Ellie rolls over from Daniel Groll on Vimeo.

Varia
August 19th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized
There are a number of things that have crossed my mind as blog-worthy over the past week, but none of them warrant their own post. So, this is a post of varia. Farmer’s Market
August 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Northfield
Here is a picture of our haul from yesterday’s farmer’s market: Some highlights: an absurdly tasty pastry, very affordable organic beef and eggs, a purple pepper, snap peas, and beets. Finally, an update on our push mower: success! It is quite a workout, but not unpleasantly so, although Em did have trouble raising her arms [...]

Swimming Pool
August 13th, 2009 · No Comments · EDG, Northfield, Uncategorized
Northfield has a fanstastic swimming pool. We went yesterday evening with Ellie who graciously tolerated our excited dunkings and sprinklings. The pool was filled with parents and their children. It struck us quite suddenly that we were parents. Of a child. Remarkable.

My blood for a lawn
August 11th, 2009 · 5 Comments · DIY, Garden
So far I’m pretty taken with gardening. This is surprising as we have no garden to speak of, only stretches of weedy lawn and some dug up areas I have big hopes for. We also have a delightful shady spot at the back of the house with some healthy hostas, a spectacular number of weeds [...]

Carleton Primarily Undergraduate Institution

Alright, alright people, here’s another post. Stop your agitating. And well done everyone on refraining from posting your “mellon” jokes on the blog itself, instead e-mailing them our way, for the sake of Hanna. Today was my first day on campus actually doing something. This morning I played in a jazz quartet for a group [...]
