You can’t tell me anything

There is a lot of hubris involved in being a new parent; while I’m still trying to teach Eleanor who the baby in the mirror is, she is schooling me.

IMG_7438.JPGIn my “Baby & Me” class we were given a handout which listed signs that an infant was ready for solid foods. The signs included ability to sit upright, turn head, and an “interest in food”. I thought this last sign was ridiculous; Ellie can rarely get her thumb in her mouth on the first try much less demonstrate an “interest in food”. But then, of course, it happened and she developed a keen interest in food: she became riveted whenever Daniel or I lifted a spoon to our mouths or took a bite of toast.

I was initially going to wait until Lucille and Aubrey came this weekend to try some solid food but the babe demonstrated such a longing for food, I broke down and tried some rice cereal mixed with breast milk. Apparently, it’s not too bad. Our first attempt was not a resounding success and Ellie wasn’t completely sold on the dish. However, a second try yielded great results. The child was positively lunging toward the spoon with a wide-open mouth, greedily slurping and swallowing. She is mine after all.

Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers!

Whenever I watch this video (admittedly, often), I laugh in exactly the same way as I do in the video in the same spots.

I was the BEST parent before I had kids! I knew EVERYTHING… You know what – they wont starve, KD and hot dogs for a week wont kill them, an as it turns out, the second kid is much more easygoing… or is that the parents…

You do realize I sent (poor) Andrew to “sibling ” classes where he was supposed to adapt to being an older brother…

After that (failure) I realized that for millions of years people had siblings WITHOUT the benefit of learning coping mechanisms (look at Cain and Able!) and things worked out.. Darwinism if necessary…

I didn’t know you did that. That’s very funny. Poor Andrew.

We tried some mashed sweet potatoes with Ezra yesterday with just as much laughing and somewhat less success. It was a total impulse move at my parents house and they were kind of…solid. Next time I’ll mash ‘em with some breast milk and I think he’ll really go for it. Inasmuch as dribbling orange goo all over himself can be seen as “going for it.” Happy (American) Thanksgiving!

Change the menu. Shrimp always works for me.
