I need to get better at thinking like a baby. Ellie is curious and mobile, which means that she is getting into anything and everything. A few times now, I’ve put her down and scanned the room for danger. “Looks good to me,” I said to myself, only to turn around 5 seconds later to see Ellie doing something she probably shouldn’t be. Like playing with the garbage:
Actually, I had put the garbage can there to stop her from pulling on the blue wire against the wall. Foiled!
Or putting plugs in her mouth:
And then even when she’s rendered relatively immobile, she manages to get into stuff that I wasn’t even really aware was there (so that’s where we keep our measuring cups! Btw — note the wave-on-demand at the end of the video):

Great video! Don’t bother trying to think like a baby. It can’t be done. The only thing that worked for me was to actually get down on the floor and look from the kids’ perspective at everything. Then you can see all the impending catastrophes, and prevent a few of them.
“Actually, I had put the garbage can there to stop her from pulling on the blue wire against the wall. Foiled!” Yeah… The other day I put the garbage can in our room on top of the dresser so he’d stop tipping it over and eating receipts and fuzz bunnies, and he was overjoyed to discover all the plugs and cords that had been hidden behind it. There is no winning in childproofing.
Wonderful. Welcome to parenthood where they are always one step ahead of you!!
oh lord that cord-in-mouth photo is fricking hilarious. does finding it funny mean i should not be trusted to care for children?
Props to Ellie, very impressive little girl. But, it could just be that she is a super genius! Always one step ahead of you….
@AlternaEmily: You’re asking the person who reached for the camera when he saw it happening.
hahahah
