Last Sunday we headed a couple of miles south of town to visit the Valley Grove Churches. The two churches and graveyards sit atop a hill (neither in a valley nor a grove) and command beautiful views of the countryside around our town, including a small porti
on of restored prairie and some magnificent old Oaks. The churchyard has graves from the Civil War, WWI and WWII and is on the National Register of Historic Sites. The churches were built by Norwegian farmers in the mid 19th century. One church is stone and the other is clapboard; they are both white, spare and quite lovely. There are no longer used for regular services but do host a Christmas Eve service that I would love to go to one year.
The site is open year-round. There is no parking lot, no admission booth, no posted set of rules; and on a beautiful, warm and sunny Sunday, no people. It was just us and a pair of excited bluebirds.

reminds me of the little church near the cottage at Snug Harbour and next to a cemetery.
