Taste of Northfield

June 16th, 2011 · No Comments · EDG, Northfield

We went downtown today for the Taste of Northfield. Bridge square is closed to traffic and bands play into the night (The Counterfactuals declined this year given the recent arrival of Micah Decker!!). Eleanor had a ball running around with older children and dancing (more like “dancing”) to the music. Bridge Square was packed with [...]

Eleanor is the object of study for a linguistics course in language acquisition at Carleton taught by a friend. Every time this course is offered, pairs of undergraduates descend on local children to observe their language development over the course of a semester. We’ve learned that the students vary in their approach to the task. [...]

Historic events

September 26th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Northfield, Visitors

It is an historic time in Northfield. After some 36 hours of straight, very heavy rain the Cannon River has set a new flood record and broken its banks. Fortunately, there is mostly empty space (walkways, parks etc.) bordering the river, so the damage isn’t too severe. One unfortunate exception is Froggy Bottoms Pub, which [...]

It ain’t all kittens and roses, people

September 14th, 2010 · 5 Comments · Northfield

People that read the blog from afar often remark that our life in Northfield seems so idyllic. Part of the reason things seem this way  is because they are: we love our work, our friends and, for the most part, the Northfield community. But part of it is that we make a point of not [...]

Above Average Anniversary

August 25th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Minnesota, Moving, Northfield

Fair warning, folks: I’m going to get all “Sunrise, Sunset” in this post so if you’re not in the mood, move on. We’ve been in Northfield for just over a year now. I remember when we were making final plans to choose Northfield over New York City, I warned Dan that I would likely cry [...]

World Cup Baby

June 21st, 2010 · 2 Comments · EDG, Northfield

We have been transitioning nicely into summer hours around here. To start, the end of all my day-to-day academic responsibilities coincided with the start of the World Cup. With the exception of the odd 30 minutes of Lawrence Welk, prior to last week Eleanor had basically never watched TV. In the past week, she has [...]

Valley Grove

May 18th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Minnesota, Northfield

Last Sunday we headed a couple of miles south of town to visit the Valley Grove Churches. The two churches and graveyards sit atop a hill (neither in a valley nor a grove) and command beautiful views of the countryside around our town, including a small portion of restored prairie and some magnificent old Oaks. [...]

Scoop

Breaking news here in Northfield (I’m trying to scoop Northfield News here who beat me to it the last time we had some neighborhood crime). While the mainstream media is out covering the “Motokazie Debate”, I’m telling it like it is. This has got all the elements of a great story: a crime committed under [...]

Northfield News

March 12th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Northfield

We were woken up on Tuesday morning by sirens and what appeared to be the entire fleet of Northfield fire, police and safety services parked outside our house. The dog and I later witnessed a burnt-out minivan being hauled away from the parking lot of City Hall. What happened? Well, according to local resident-cum-arsonist Mark [...]

January

February 1st, 2010 · 6 Comments · EDG, Northfield

We’ve survived our first January in Minnesota. The driveway is an ice slick. The baby has a space heater. There were some days early in the month where it was snot-freezing, eye-ball icing, car engine-whining, thermostat-busting cold. The house isn’t too drafty but you can’t put Eleanor on the carpet to play until the place [...]
