Things got off to a slow start for us socially speaking. We weren’t foolish enough to expect bustle, but we did expect people sitting on porches, going for walks, & playing in the parks. We saw very little of that in early August: we would take Belly for a walk around the neighborhood and see [...]

DJJD

September 13th, 2009 · 3 Comments · EDG, Northfield

This weekend was DJJD here in Northfield, Minnesota. No, not WWJD (it’s not that kind of town), but DJJD: Defeat of Jesse James Days. For those of you not intimately familiar with the history of Northfield and the James-Younger gang, Northfield was the site of a James-Yonger gang robbery that was successfully aborted by the [...]

Tiny’s Hot Dogs

August 23rd, 2009 · 3 Comments · Northfield

As many of you know, I loves me some hot dogs. I know how they’re made. I even watched a show once about it. And I still love them. They’re a bit of Americana I’ve adopted whole hog (so to speak). Eating hot dogs is wildly inconsistent with my semi-firm commitment to eating ethical meat. [...]

Farmer’s Market

August 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Northfield

Here is a picture of our haul from yesterday’s farmer’s market: Some highlights: an absurdly tasty pastry, very affordable organic beef and eggs, a purple pepper, snap peas, and beets. Finally, an update on our push mower: success! It is quite a workout, but not unpleasantly so, although Em did have trouble raising her arms [...]

Swimming Pool

August 13th, 2009 · No Comments · EDG, Northfield, Uncategorized

Northfield has a fanstastic swimming pool. We went yesterday evening with Ellie who graciously tolerated our excited dunkings and sprinklings. The pool was filled with parents and their children. It struck us quite suddenly that we were parents. Of a child. Remarkable.

Rain

August 7th, 2009 · 2 Comments · House, Northfield

I’m sitting on our (enclosed) front porch, watching the rain, the first rain since we’ve arrived. The porch has quickly become our favorite place to hang out. We usually bring our breakfast out here and read the Sunday Times which, with Ellie on the scene, really does take us the whole week to get through [...]

Northfield, Minnesota

So here we are. We arrived on Thursday evening, closed on the house Friday morning and our truck came Saturday. Ellie was a complete pain the last couple of days in Chicago and we briefly considered leaving her at a rest stop in Wisconsin. Belly sensed an opening for re-taking #1 and has been completely [...]

Contingency (EmJC)

May 14th, 2009 · 4 Comments · House, Northfield, Uncategorized

We removed the “inspection” contingency from our purchase agreement on the house today. Barring disaster, it’s ours! We are now legally obligated to blow our life’s savings on a 90-year old house with a 30-page inspector’s report. I could bore you to tears about everything we’ve learned in the past 6 days. We now know [...]

Chicago Baby (ejc)

April 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Chicago, Northfield, Pregnancy

Two sets of friends have noted that the baby will be able to lay claim to Chicago as a birthplace. In Northfield, this could possibly give our child a bit of cache: Birdie can be very sangfroid about corrupt grade school officials and “pay-to-play” extracurriculars. It’s a shame we’re not still in Hyde Park as the [...]
